RECORD TRAFFIC AT THE DEER LAKE REGIONAL AIRPORT

August 13, 2002

The Deer Lake Regional Airport has recorded its highest ever passenger traffic statistics for the month of July. The total number of enplaning/deplaning passengers in July, 2002 was 17,041 representing an increase of nearly 21% over the same period last year when 14,122 passengers arrived or departed through the airport. The previous record of 16,217 passenger movements was established in 1999.
The Airport Authority also tracks commercial passenger aircraft movements on a monthly basis and the airport posted an increase of 22% over the same period last year. Aircraft statistics in July, 2002 increased by 386 to 2132 movements representing the highest number of movements since 1999.

“It has been an exceptional summer thus far”, said Carl Stratton, Chairman of the Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority. “All aspects of the airport operation have experienced increased activity and we anticipate this will continue through to the end of summer and early fall”, added Stratton.

Jamie Schwartz, Airport Manager, attributed the increase in passenger traffic to additional airline service, enhanced schedules and competitive fares. “The traveling public now has a number of different airline service choices when flying from Deer Lake”, said Schwartz. Airlines providing service at Deer Lake include Air Canada Jazz, Tango, Skyservice and Provincial Airlines. “It is clear that passenger traffic can be stimulated when we provide an expanded service that offers attractive fares. The Western Newfoundland market has always been strong during the summer tourist season and we are experiencing an increase in customer support as a result of the service now available from the airlines”, added Schwartz.

The Deer Lake Regional Airport serves Western Newfoundland with regularly scheduled passenger service to and from locations such as St. John’s, Goose Bay, Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Wabush with connections worldwide. The Airport is one of a few remaining airports in Canada that does not charge or collect an airport improvement fee or passenger facilitation fee.
