Airport Awards Final Contract for Terminal Building Expansion Project May 15, 2006, Deer Lake, NL The Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority has awarded a contract for the completion of the Air Terminal Building Expansion and Renovation Project to Marco Services Limited of St. John’s in the amount of $7,383,000. Work on the final phase of the $10 million project, funded solely by the Airport Authority, will commence shortly and is scheduled for completion in March, 2007. The expansion and renovation project will more than double the size of the existing building for a total of nearly 55,000 square feet. The newly renovated facility will include a 250 seat departure lounge, a new international arrivals area with customs facilities, a new domestic arrivals area with two baggage conveyors, 5 new car rental counters, a new gift shop, television lounge, information kiosk, and an enlarged meeter/greeter area for the general public. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Carl Stratton, is pleased with the work thus far. “The project is both on schedule and on budget at this point in time and we hope this will continue through to project completion”, said Stratton. The Regional Airport has experienced record growth in recent years and this trend is continuing in 2006. Passenger traffic for the first four months of this year has increased by 11% over the same period in 2005. A record 225,094 enplaning/deplaning passengers traveled through the Airport in 2005, representing a whopping 71% increase in traffic since the year 2000. Jamie Schwartz, Airport Manager, indicated the expanded facilities are necessary to meet the present market conditions and future growth. “We are desperate for larger facilities and improved services to keep pace with the market growth”, said Schwartz. “Each and every day we experience challenges in properly managing the volumes of traffic that use our facilities and we are anxious to finish this project so that we can improve the travel experience for our patrons”, added Schwartz. The Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority now offers daily direct non-stop service to Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, St. John’s and Goose Bay with connections worldwide.
