Airport awards tenders for Terminal Building Expansion Project
The Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority is one step closer to meeting its objective for a $10 million expansion and renovation to the Air Terminal Building. On Tuesday, September 27, 2005 the Authority awarded a contract for Demolition, Site Work and Foundations to Brook Enterprises in the amount of $1,807,570 and also awarded a second contract for Structural Steel to Skyway Steel Limited in the amount of $1,090,775. The prime consultant for the project, John Hearn Architect, is developing the specifications for the general contract for the remainder of the work which will be tendered this winter and awarded early in 2006. Work on the 18-month project will commence immediately and be completed in the spring of 2007. The expansion project will more than double the size of the existing building from roughly 25,000 square feet to approximately 52,000 square feet. The new facility will include an expanded departure lounge, a new international arrivals area with customs facilities, a new domestic arrivals area with two baggage conveyors, new car-rental counters, a new gift shop, a television lounge, a new information kiosk and an enlarged meeter/greeter area for the general public. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Carl Stratton, is pleased that work will begin shortly. “The project was announced nearly a year ago and we are pleased to finally break ground with these contracts” said Stratton. “It was always our intention to begin construction this year to meet our completion date and we remain optimistic that we will reach our target,” added Stratton. The Deer Lake Regional Airport now serves Western Newfoundland with twenty regularly scheduled passenger flights each day to destinations including St. John’s, Goose Bay, Wabush, and Halifax with connections worldwide. A total of four different airlines; Air Canada Jazz, Air Labrador, CanJet Airlines and Provincial Airlines, now offer a regular service to and from Deer Lake. The Airport also provides a seasonal international charter service to and from the United Kingdom. |
