Normore Memorial Foundation Launches Major Fundraiser

The Eric Normore Memorial foundation, a duly incorporated charitable organization, has launched its first major fundraiser in an effort to support the Town of Deer Lake in building a swimming pool and bowling alley complex to be integrated with Hodder Memorial Centre.
The Foundation will be conducting a ticket lottery and the major prize will be a 1346 square foot home on lakefront property on Nicholsville Road in Deer Lake. The Town of Deer Lake has donated the land for the project and the Foundation will be constructing the home this summer in time for the lucky winner to move in when the draw is completed on December 20, 2001.

Melvin Chaulk, Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee, suggested that the actual construction of the home will generate excitement, exposure and ticket sales for the lottery and residents or visitors will be able to view the home when it is completed this summer. “The home will be nearing completion this summer when many ex-patriot Newfoundlanders return to visit family and friends”, said Chaulk. “We hope to sell a lot of tickets to residents or former residents who may be attending the annual Strawberry Festival”, he added.

The first ticket for the draw was purchased by Albert Boulos, a long-time resident of Deer Lake, who has been involved in many community activities and organizations including the Legion. The Foundation was named after the late Eric Stanley Normore, a friend of Albert Boulos, who enlisted and fought in World War II but, unlike Mr. Boulos, Mr. Normore did not return from action and his body was never recovered. He was twenty-two years old. Mayor Cyril Goodyear indicated that it was very fitting that Albert Boulos purchase the first ticket in recognition of Eric Normore and the sacrifice of all those who served in the Second World War. “The Foundation was established to perpetuate the memory of Eric Normore and others who fought so gallantly; and to raise and invest funds to improve the quality of life for our citizens”, said Goodyear. Founding members include Jim Goudie, President; Donna Andrews, Secretary; and Todd Lee, Treasurer.

In addition to the grand prize draw, the lottery will also offer an ATV as an early bird prize to be drawn on May 24, 2001. Tickets, priced at $20.00 each, will soon be available through major retailers and businesses in Deer Lake and Western Newfoundland. The tickets were printed with the generous support of Tim Hortons in Deer Lake. Todd Lee, a member of the Foundation is pleased with the community and corporate support that has come forward to support this worthy project. “We have been and will continue to solicit donations of any kind to support this fundraising effort”, said Lee. “The entire region will benefit from this new facility and we anticipate the residents and the corporate community will lend as much assistance as possible by selling and purchasing tickets or providing in-kind support”, stated Lee. As a bonafide charity, the Foundation can provide official receipts for tax purposes on any donations or contributions. “This is another incentive for those who wish to become involved”, added Lee.
