Airport Traffic Up Despite Economic Slowdown
January 11, 2017 Deer Lake, NL The Deer Lake Regional Airport experienced a 7% increase in passenger traffic in 2016 and established a new record for the busiest year ever. The number of travelers to and from the airport hit a new high of 364,714. The stronger than anticipated year was marked by month over month increases in all months with the exception of January and April. Record monthly traffic was also set in 8 out of the 12 months in 2016. A remarkably busy summer tourist season helped traffic levels reach new highs and August set a new mark of 50,647 passengers for the busiest month in the history of the airport.
Jamie Schwartz, Airport CEO, indicated that traffic was higher than projected for a variety of reasons. “The decline in the commuting worker traffic to Alberta was offset, in large part, by the transition of workers to and from the Muskrat Falls project”, said Schwartz. “Furthermore, an exceptionally stronger than usual summer tourist season generated greater demand for air travel”, added Schwartz.
The Chair of the Airport Authority, Walter Dominie, was pleased to see traffic levels exceed the forecasted numbers. We had expected a decline in traffic due to the challenges associated with resource based economies and the resulting impact on commuting workers”, said Dominie. “We are encouraged by the numbers but remain cautious on our outlook for 2017 due to the continued economic uncertainty for the oil sector in particular”, added Dominie.
The Deer Lake Regional Airport provides regular or seasonal domestic and charter
passenger services with several airlines including Air Canada, Air Canada Express, PAL
Airlines, Sunwing, WestJet and WestJet Encore.
